In a film that brings together some of today's sharpest comedic talents, TINA FEY (TV's 30 Rock, Mean Girls, Saturday Night Live) and AMY POEHLER (Blades of Glory, Mean Girls, Saturday Night Live) team with writer/director MICHAEL MCCULLERS (writer of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Undercover Brother) and producers LORNE MICHAELS (Saturday Night Live, Mean Girls) and JOHN GOLDWYN (Hot Rod, I'm Not There) to tell the story of two women, one apartment and nine months that will change their lives: Baby Mama.
Joining them for the film is a comic supporting cast that includes STEVE MARTIN (Cheaper by the Dozen, Bringing Down the House), GREG KINNEAR (Little Miss Sunshine, Stuck on You), DAX SHEPARD (Employee of the Month, Let's Go To Prison), ROMANY MALCO (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Blades of Glory), MAURA TIERNEY (Liar Liar, Primary Colors), HOLLAND TAYLOR (TV's Two and a Half Men, The Wedding Date) and SIGOURNEY WEAVER (Galaxy Quest, Heartbreakers) as the friends and family who alternately support/are wary of the prenatal arrangement.
Audiences have come to know Tina Fey from not only her years as head writer and co-star of Saturday Night Live, but from her Emmy-and Golden Globe-winning role as sketch-comedy producer Liz Lemon on 30 Rock-a show that she created, stars in and executive produces. Now she and former SNL castmate Amy Poehler, the scene stealing co-anchor of SNL's "Weekend Update," have re-teamed as a modern-day odd couple with a very unique arrangement.
In Baby Mama, we meet the newly promoted vice president for Round Earth Organic Market, Kate Holbrook (Fey), at the top of her game. Fastidious Kate has her life in order: a job she loves, a guru boss (Steve Martin) who adores her, a beautiful Philadelphia apartment and financial security. But having put a personal life on the back burner while she concentrated on her career-to the chagrin of mom Rose (Holland Taylor)-Kate discovers, at age 37, a deep yearning to have a baby.
Unmarried, and with no immediate prospects for a husband, Kate decides to become a single mom-to the delight of sister Caroline (Maura Tierney)-and patronizes the best sperm bank. But home pregnancy tests come up negative, and her plan to have a child is derailed after a fertility specialist tells her she has only a million-to-one chance of getting pregnant.
Undaunted, Kate visits Chaffee Bicknell's (Sigourney Weaver) surrogacy center, which arranges for her to meet a potential surrogate, Angie Ostrowiski (Amy Poehler). As Kate and wiseguy doorman Oscar (Romany Malco) wait outside their building for her arrival from the Philly suburbs, a battered car pulls up. Angie and her common-law husband, Carl (Dax Shepard), emerge from the wreck and stop bickering long enough to meet Kate and inspect her home. Impressed by both Kate's "aura" and her bank account, Angie agrees to be her surrogate.
When Angie's pregnancy test brings good news, Kate goes into precision nesting mode: reading childcare books, watching childbirth DVDs and baby-proofing the apartment, all while balancing her biggest work project yet: finding a site and building the company's flagship store.
But Kate's well-organized strategy is turned upside down when Angie shows up at her doorstep with no place to live. An opportunity for structured Kate to turn vibrant Angie into the perfect expectant mom devolves into a comic battle of wills as Angie resists the strict rules of prenatal parenting. Oddly inspired by the free spirit that has invaded her home, Kate lets her guard down and starts a romance of her own, with local juice-bar owner Rob (Greg Kinnear).
As the two women struggle their way through comic preparation for the baby's arrival, Kate and Angie will discover that there are two kinds of family: the one you're born to and the one you make.
Baby Mama's accomplished behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography DARYN OKADA (Mean Girls, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay), production designer JESS GONCHOR (The Devil Wears Prada, Capote), editor BRUCE GREEN (Runaway Bride, Freaky Friday) and costume designer RENÉE EHRLICH KALFUS (Chocolat, The Cider House Rules). The music is by JEFF RICHMOND (TV's 30 Rock, Saturday Night Live).
JILL MESSICK (Mean Girls, Frida), LOUISE ROSNER (Mean Girls, Hot Rod) and RYAN KAVANAUGH (The Bank Job, 21) serve as executive producers.
